Waterproof fabric
We measure a fabric's resistance to water pressure, expressed as a water column in mm (based on the ISO 811 standard). The higher the water pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. A fabric with a 2000 mm waterproof rating can withstand the pressure of 2000 mm water (corresponding to about an hour of rain).
Garment waterproofing
Technology: this garment has been shower-tested using 26 gallons of water/sqm/hour for 3 hours. This test reproduces the conditions of a violent storm in the mountains.
The inner layer is a coating rather than a genuine layer
Fabric breathability
In addition to breathable fabrics, Quechua develops technical solutions (zippers, ventilation, mesh, etc.) to improve the overall ventilation of its trekking jackets and overpants (Forclaz, Bionnassay and Helium lines).
These ventilation systems allow you to regulate the temperature inside the garment and also to facilitate the transfer of perspiration generated by the body during physical effort.
Fabric with coating or a membrane
Coating: like a layer of "paint" applied on the underside of the fabric to make it waterproof while remaining breathable. It is often less costly than a membrane, and requires a lining for protection.
The membrane: is like a very fine plastic film (polyurethane) making the component waterproof while remaining breathable. It has the edge, being more supple, lightweight, durable and often more breathable than coating.
3-, 2- or 2.5-layer fabric
"3 layers": the membrane is bonded to an inner and outer layer of the component. This construction helps the membrane last longer and boosts the component's performance.
"2 layers": the membrane is only bonded to the outer layer, the inner protective lining is "free". This construction costs less but is generally more cumbersome.
"2.5 layers": the membrane has inner protection with a kind of varnish coating rather than an actual layer to make it as lightweight as possible.
Water repellent fabric
A fabric is water repellent when it allows water to slide over its surface without seeping in. This prevents the fabric from becoming saturated, and keeps it lightweight, breathable and warm. The fabric is made water repellent by treating its outer surface. This treatment must be renewed throughout the garment's lifetime (recommended after every three washes). All Quechua's waterproof jackets have received a water-repellent treatment.
Additional recommended products
Forclaz Rain pants protect the lower half of your body, forming a complete and effective rain protection system for your mountain excursions.
Care products: spray or liquid water repellent treatment in the washing machine. Helps renew fabric's water-repellent properties and optimize your garment performance throughout its life.
A score for comparing productsand#x27; environmental impact
The product's environmental impact is calculated across its entire life cycle using different indicators.
An overall ABCDE score is allocated to help you more readily identify the products with the best environmental performance by comparing the same type of product (T-shirts, pants, backpacks, etc.).

Product Testing
Quechua is based at the foot of Mont Blanc, in the Haute-Savoie region (France). All year round, our design teams create and develop products that are appealing, simple, and technologically advanced. These are then tested in the field by our technical partners and mountain professionals in the most challenging conditions. We believe that it is only through rigorous testing in real-life conditions, identical to target-use conditions, that we can continue to improve our products.
